Newly appointed army chief Major General Amir Hatami pledged continued retaliation against Israel in a statement following his promotion.
Thanking the Supreme Leader for his trust, Hatami said Iranian forces responded from the first moments of Israel’s assault and would deliver “decisive and effective blows” to what he called the “illegitimate and child-killing Zionist regime.”
Six members of Iran’s regular army were killed in an Israeli strike early Sunday on a military base in Sarpol-e Zahab, Kermanshah province, the Hengaw rights group reported.
Several others were injured. Videos circulating in Iranian media show heavy smoke and large explosions in Shiraz and Kermanshah.
Iran has launched approximately 280 ballistic missiles at Israel since Friday, according to the Israeli military.
While most were intercepted by air defenses, the IDF said dozens were deliberately allowed through to strike open areas, avoiding damage to critical infrastructure.
Casualties and destruction have nonetheless mounted as Iranian strikes target civilian zones.
